Romans History

In 1986, a group of American football enthusiasts met on the fields of Handbridge College and started to learn the fundamentals of the game. In June 1986, the newly-named team, the Chester Romans, had a squad of 25. Joined by Paul Kissling from Chicago, they played their first ever game against the Rotherham Redskins in September 1986, winning 38-25.

The Romans are still playing competitive football after 20 years and regularly play against the UK's best teams. In 1999, the Romans won the Division 2 championship and gained their place in the top division. After a poor 2005 season the Romans were relegated back to Division 2 but improved their standings after the 2006 season, which saw them regain Division 1 status. Following realignment of the league between the 2006-2007 season the Romans were moved from the BAFL Central Division to the BAFL North Division.

The 2007 season ended with the Romans' record standing at 1 win and 9 losses. Due to this record and BAFL realignments, the Romans began the 2008 season relegated to Division 2 status and played the following teams: Edinburgh Wolves, Glasgow Tigers, Lancashire Wolverines, Manchester Titans, and the Merseyside Nighthawks. The Romans ended their 2008 season with no wins and 10 losses.

In 2009 a very young Romans squad started the season 2-1-0, but unfortuntately tailed off to a 2-1-7 season but it was the start of the re-building exercise

The 2010 season had the Romans improving again with a 5-5 record finishing the campaign with a 3 match winning streak, the introduction of new blood to the team was paying off and the foundations are in place to push for play off football
